In Q4 2023, we saw the inflation rate finally begin to slow with average item value only increasing by 2.6%.

However, this only adds to price increases enacted in 2021 and 2022. While price is not inflating nearly as drastically as over the last two years, units per customer are still declining by -2.3%.

This shows us that customers are struggling and looking for ways to reduce their grocery bills with each shopping trip. 

Historically, customers have used two strategies to seek value in grocery: own brands and promotions. Are these two levers being used effectively by retailers and CPGs today?
